as a rule I will start at about 4" on the bottom, which I think is enough so as to keep the worm on the bottom by about 2" when you start to pull it slowly through your swim, as you create an angle between float and bait, rather that vertical when the bait is static.

Very informative article.
I enjoy fishing chopped worm, and like you say you chop the worm to the size of fish you are targeting and I also as a rule of thumb will have my hook bait a similar size to the chopped.
A tip for anyone fishing heavily stocked carp waters, and this works as well for any other venue you fish, is that as most fish are by nature inquistive, I will let my bait hit the deck, wait for say 20 seconds and if there is no action, I will start to drag the hook bait very very slowly along the bottom, and I with out exception will get a response and would say 75% of the time hook a fish.

Tight lines

re your problem with hooking your worm I imagine part of your trouble is keeping the worm on the barbless hook I always hook the worm about half an inch below its head and then put on a piece of elastic band about 6mm long I find that the ones the post office use for keeping letters together are great for the job and so easy to find you spot loads lying on the pavements that the postie has discarded during his or her rounds each morning. also the ones I find are red and the don't half look like a red maggot worm cocktail presentation to me
