Look at 100mtr sprinters and at the top level only 1 second seperates them all, this is similar to top match anglers. Hence why you have to look over a series or period of time to establish facts on whoose the best or most consistent etc. On this basis Alan Scotthorne is the best angler to fish the world float fishing championships ever, with 5 individual golds. There are some fantastic anglers in the UK that will never represent this country but are easily capable of doing so, but there are only so many places, and some probably couldnt afford too. It sometimes seems to be that in general the Northerners opt for Scotthorne, picko etc and the southerners Raison, gardner etc. It would be interesting for one of the monthlys to set up a home and away fish off between the northern and southern frontrunners for individual glory. Not the matchfishing cup which any of the anglers could win based on draw but a straight peg 4 peg battle. Would the anglers do it?

Thats a fantastic idea. Maybe over two or three different types of venue as well. The north v south battle that they hosted at Lindholme and Monks didnt strike me as fair, and both sides claimed to have won so I am not sure what happend there!

I've just stumbled over this topic the greatest angler ever if you are looking in the past anglers like big Kevin ashurst Ian heaps Ivan marks all top of the game Ivan sticks out the most perhaps that's because he was from Leicester and the fact he lived on Shakespeare street all his life it was close just to go and chat to him let alone fish with him as i did Ivan would always sort methods rigs and bait out quicker than anyone else and if he was alive today he would be as good as the modern day stars up until he died Ivan was taking anglers up the glebe carp fishing and very often broke the ton as for modern day anglers the the game has changed with fuel costs commercials spring up like corner shops everywhere and the lack of 100 to 300 peg matches the modern day angler has the toughest job and that's why will raisin, steve ringer and Alan scothorne are he greatest anglers of modern time they have to put far more work into there fishing than Ivan had too and often for little reward at the end i for one love to watch and follow theses lads
don't get me wrong the class of angling just below these lads is second to none and the list is long Steve gardener bob nudd seam to have been around for life then of course the new kids on the block
angling is a great sport and to choose the greatest is very hard

Tough to call! Big Al has an awesome record as does Bob Nudd!..perhaps it could be in categories?....As all rounders they are awesome but could Alan beat John Allerton with a stick float many times?
There are some amazing lads who are awesome on "their" method so mebbe a greatest on each method is in order?

BTW it would have to be Big Al for me as all round best, but I can See Will Raison mebbe challenging that view in the future!...who knows what's round the corner?
