Thumbs up Fiskerton

Madangler,

I'm originally from Mansfield and used to fish the Trent all the time...mid 80's till early 90's till I moved South.

My dad used to be into Match angling but really gave up with the demise of the river....he now goes to Fiskerton most Mondays, (in season) and fishes the 1st peg below the wharf for barbel.

He shares the peg with his equally old mate, and they use carp gear and hair rigged big pellets....they've had alot of success especially when the river is carrying water, chucking a bomb on the crease. They've had numerous doubles and biggest 13lb odd. Before the end of the season, a 5lb chub came his way but didn't even seem interested.....thats the barbel madness coming out!!!

Other than this, he tells me there are a couple of pegs at East Stoke they go to......don't know exactly where though.

Amazingly, it seems to me its become a bit of a speci water!!!!

Cheers

I had a day at Fiskerton (Barnsley's stretch) in the low numbers last year & caught decent double figure weight of pristine roach (6 ounces average) with a few bigger perch on the stick (on caster/hemp)....very enjoyable & a nice change!....mebbe the Trent will become a roach venue again, there were certainly plenty of them around!

Everybody else I saw was targetting barbel though!

If you fancy a few big river bream mebbe you should try the 370's at the top end above the weir at Burton Joyce!(on the large bend).... my m8 has had some great bags there......it's not a nice walk though (in fact it's bloody torture for a man of my fatness levels!)

Judging by what it says in Angling Times, it is bouncing back big time!

loads of balls.

only way it will bounce back as a match river is if..

a. someone turns the powerstations back on. (chances of that are nil)
b. the sewage starts being put back in as it used to be, helping give it a nice colour and some life (chances nil) as 'clear water syndrome' is a killer
c. the trent is repegged giving everyone the equivalent of 3-4 pegs (based on the current pegging)

There are still matches run by Newark & district on the Dyke (stonefields near Farndon) I pleasured it a couple of times last season & got nice mixed bags on the stick (15/20lbs) & the pegs are well comfortable.
I agree with Pelletking to a large degree, & at Burton Joyce there have been local matches with generous pegging throwing up consistantly decent weights with the roach etc.
Like I said, there are tons of 6/8 0z roach at Fiskerton to be had trotting the stick, & I'm sure the dog roach will be there too!
Things do look a lot more promising than a few years ago, but there's still a ways to go before matchmen return in any numbers....if at all!

Still nice to have a change from the commercials though!

bagging machine you are absolutely bang on the money in what you say. the trent is solid with fish, and as you say its stuffed with roach. It just isnt the sort of place to handle tons of anglers anymore like in the glory days. generous pegging will help obviously but people thinking its going to return to its former glory...not a chance unless a. and b. happen as I posted above.

I went to collingham last year and when the tide turned I had 27lb of roach in 4hr on the stick, it was awesome fishing. Been back though and never found those numbers again but it shows they are still there.

its just another venue struck down by the dreaded 'clear water syndrome' which is a direct result of those to55ers in Europe who rule us. Apparently putting a bit of sewage in is classed as pollution. As a result our rivers are extremely clean but lack plant life, aquatic life, shrimps etc etc and colour in the water.

Prime example...I went to a commercial last week thats rammed with fish but its had some extra water in and gone clear, could see a foot down.

the result - it fished rock hard, the fish were un catchable. theres a moral in there somewhere....
