Default Loading Reels

I reckon I must be doing something wrong. the last 3 times I have been fishing I have ended up with a birds nest around my reel, and I cant work out why! I have filled it nearly to the rim with a fairly thick line that you would think would lie well it doesn't seem to want to lie right! I lost a bream which must have been knocking 3lb because of it last weekend. Anyone got any suggestions what I can do to sort it?

How have you loaded the line on the reel? If it was put on with two much tension, it is possible that this has caused the line to spring off the reel. Keep you eyes peeled on the 'learn to fish' section, we will be including an article on correctly loading reels over the next couple of weeks

Hi nofish008
Make sure the line coming of the spool lays the same way on the reel spool. Someimes line that you buy has been on a spool for a long time and has a 'memory' It is best to use the memory and reel it on the same way.

What main line do you use for you carping down White Acres Stewart? I tried fishing 3lb Maxima on the waggler on Pollwyn and kept getting smashed!

I use the same as you 3lb Maxima and have not experienced any problems. If I can get away with it I also use 6lb Diawa Sensor which is very good line and quite cheap.
When do you get broken? If it is on the strike perhaps you are striking a litle too hard?

Do you even use 3lb mainline for the bomb Stewart? I've been using 6lb Daiwa Sensor all the time- Sounds like I have been fishing far too heavy!

I had my biggest fish, a 23lb mirror on 3lb Maxima, you can land anything with it if you take your time

No Tom I use heavier line for fishing the bomb. Simple reason is casting tight to islands and using a line clip with a heavey weights do not mix and it is the line that breaks. Also I am not one of those anglers who spends time trying to sink the line, I let it sink by it's self. After casting I tighten up quickly and watch the line for bites whilst it is sinking, I then tighten up the line properly to the tip. That is for carp fishing by the way. When I am fishing for silvers say at Porth I use a light line as it improves bite registration and cuts the resistance from the tow. I know a lot of people use braid but I prefer my way.

Cheers Stewart. Will be investing in a new spool of 6lb Daiwa Sensor, and some 3lb Maxima for Porth and the pellet wag.
