SURREY
Bury Hill Fisheries, Dorking
Bonds Lake is supplying decent returns to pleasure visitors. Bags up to 100lb are still possible before it gets too cold. Pole and waggler with pellet, corn or meat works best. Its also worth fishing a small grip feeder packed with soft pellet and a banded or hair-rigged pellet cast out to the island. Expect the quality roach in Milton to start feeding well through late autumn and into winter with caster over hemp the main method. Corn and meat will sort out some better stamp fish, but at a slower rate. Keep feed to a minimum during this time, but keep it going in on a regular basis. Tel: Russ in the shop on 01306 883621.
Pen Ponds, Richmond Park
Two lakes that rarely see any angling pressure set in the picturesque royal park that not only offers wonderful wildlife, including wild deer but also offers very challenging and sometimes frustrating carp fishing. There are two ponds that are fishable with the smaller one offering carp up to the 20lb mark and can be caught using a variety of methods with a straight running rig with hair rig boilie being the favourite method that accounts for most of the fish. The larger pond can be approached with the same rigs and methods but offers larger fish with a resident mirror topping the 40lb mark. As this fishery is set within the park, a lot of public traffic passes the ponds which at times can be off putting due to the noise and the amount of dogs on there daily walk. Season Tickets Only. £25 per rod or £12.50 OAPs. Tickets from Holly Lodge on 0208 948 3209.
River Wey, Woodside Farm, Frensham
A lovely stretch of the Wey that offers classic small river fishing and contains a variety of species with chub being the main target with the odd trout even thrown in for good measure. This particular stretch receives very little pressure so most tactics will get you bites as the fish are not rig shy once you have found them. The most successful tactic is a 2-3BB stick float with a size 18 hook carrying double maggot will catch you everything that inhabits this lovely stretch of river. Best advice to give as with any small river is to keep mobile. Most anglers fishing the stretch spend twenty minutes to half an hour and then move on if bites slow down or are not forthcoming. Farnham Angling Society members only. Contact Mike Borras at the Creel for more info on 01252 320871 or visit www.farnhamanglingsociety.com
Willinghurst, Shamley Green
Horseshoe Lake is producing well to corn and pellet with F1′s and carp but the bigger fish are coming late to catmeat fished down the edge. New Lake is seeing the pva bag take some fish to 18lb from just a rod length out. Corn is playing second fiddle to pellet. Old Lake is producing to PVA bag, method and pole best options. Oak and Cherry Tree is showing plenty of mixed silvers to float and maggot. On Main Lake, PVA bags fished between the islands are accounting for fish to 25lb. Christmas Tree is again showing good returns to PVA bags with banded or hair-rigged pellet out to the island best. Pittance is fishing pretty well with corn and pellet down the edge. Horseshoe is now platformed, making life a bit easier and pathways are taking shape around Old and Horseshoe Lakes with over 300 tons of scalpins being laid… and another 400 tons to go! Keep up to date via www.willinghurstfishery.co.uk or call Terry or Mick on 07960 882493.
Wyke Farm Pond, Ash Green
A small water on the outskirts of Aldershot. Coming in at only half an acre, its not the sort of water you would tire from by walking around but don’t let looks and size deceive you as this little fishery is magic. There are no record breaking fish present but what is stocked and regularly caught is tench to 5lb, roach to 1lb 8oz, perch 2lb. Due to its size, quietness is of great importance as well as the right approach. Pole fishing dominates but small waggler fished shallow will bring you plenty of bites with corn, maggots, and worm being the best baits. The old age rule of feeding small amounts but regular also applies at this great little water. Apart from the fishing the water has a great get away from it all feeling for those days when relaxation is just as important as catching. Farnham AS members only. WEST SUSSEX
Back Arun, Arundel
Carp lake is fishing extremely well with 100lb needed to win matches. Good weights are coming from all around lake on meat. The inside lines can produce late so keep feeding them throughout the day. Silvers Lake is showing the odd large carp up to 14lb on meat, but there’s plenty of skimmers to 1.5lb, tench to 2lb, small crucians, roach and rudd. Use corn as maggot will only draw in hordes of smaller fish. Tel: Malcolm on 01903 721546 (after 6pm)
MBK Coloured Ponds, Rake
A 2 hour junior teach-in day with just whips and maggot on Pond 1 produced small carp, crucians and silvers with the occasional perch muscling in. Pond 2 fishing well for small carp, skimmers and roach on corn, maggot and pellet. Ponds 3 & 4 have been recording weights up to 50lb for various visiting clubs, consisting mainly of small carp and silvers. Maggot, caster and meat have been the favourite baits fished over loose fed 3mm pellet. The Speci Pond 5 saw Gary Cox of Waterlooville banked a 19.5lb ghostie on a mussel and oyster boilie as well as a 19lb common to a spicy chicken boilie during a 24 hour session. Tel: Kenny on 07885 754365.
Passies Ponds, Coombes, nr Lancing
Main Lake is fishing very well for carp especially on evening sessions. The Match Lake is producing F1′s to 4lb and mirrors to 15lb although many average out at 7/8lb. Paste has been the better bait but more cooler weather sees meat, corn and maggot taking over. Tel: Trevor Passmore on 01273 465257.
WILTSHIRE
Kennet and Avon Canal, Devizes to Avoncliff
Fishing reasonably well for small fish and skimmers, though tench will now calm down until spring except on warmer days with a westerly wind when there is still the possibility of odd fish to 5lb from Devizes, Horton and Seend Park. Avoncliff is now the place to target, as with fewer boats the fishing will improve and soon the fish will switch on to the bread. This is the time to enjoy double figure bags of roach and skimmers to punch fished at around 9m in the deeper water. For a good days pleasure fishing try the pounds at Rowde, carp to over 20lb are still feeding well to large halibuts over particles and flake on zig rigs tight across. Pike fishing is now allowed and good places to target are the pounds in Devizes for lots of quality fish to over 14lb with the chance of a much larger fish. Keep mobile with plugs and jerkbaits for best results. Contact Wests Tackle 01225 755472.
River Avon, Trowbridge to Bradford
Good pleasure bags are possible from Ladydown through to Staverton with Biss Mouth capable of double-figure roach nets. Moving towards Bath, Candy’s and Churches have fished well in recent matches with 16lb nets of roach needed for the frame. Barbel are still feeding well and seem to have adjusted to the odd weather best of all, Limpley Stoke, Avoncliff and Lacock are good bets for specimen fish whilst the free stretch in Bradford will produce smaller fish in larger bags. Chance of some decent chub and silver bream here. Contact Wests Tackle on 01225 755472.
Rood Ashton, Trowbridge
A perfect destination for the pleasure angler and junior who wishes to catch plenty of fish on a variety of methods. Carp are now well and truly over spawning and feeding confidently in the margins on pellet and cat meat. In the evening when the sun drops behind the trees anglers fishing floating baits are catching well with larger fish in the 6-9lb class bread and dog biscuit are best. Paste is now starting to take hold and fish are responding to small pieces of paste fished at around 9-11m or down the edge, feed frugally with pellet to keep the fish interested. Regular matches are held on this water with weights regularly exceeding the ton. Tel: 01380 870272.
Shear Water, Warminster
Still in top form with most anglers enjoying superb sport on a variety of methods. Huge bream bags have been reported by local anglers fishing with crumb feeders and hair rigged expander pellets. You cannot use keepnets on this venue, but over 50 slabs in a single day session from the roadside bank, casting just over the famous Shear Water shelf at around 30 yards, must represent 200lb-plus. Carp anglers are still reporting good fish in the 11-20lb bracket with most baits working well, a good start here is to cast beyond the shelf to avoid bream. Contact Nicko on 01985 844496 or 07889 625999.
Silverlands Fishery, Gastard, nr Lacock
This three acre gravel pit is highly regarded by specimen carp anglers who regularly report fish over 30lb, with the lake record a whopping 38lb. On first glance it’s a fairly nondescript venue with shallow margins and little in the way of features, but there are a few hotspots to target for the resident carp. The backwater has two swims and is a favourite for overnight anglers, as is the reed lined bay close to the car park offering some of the only marginal cover. Most baits will score but it is not an easy water to master and presentation is everything. Chod rigs have accounted for some very large fish in recent weeks. Another aspect to this fishery is the bream and tench, which can reward the angler who sets their stall out for them with nets to well over 150lb on the right day. Keepnets are allowed and we advise always carrying two to avoid overfilling. Contact: Wick Farm on 01249 730244.
Witherington Farm, Downton, nr Salisbury
Pleasure fishing sessions on Barnmoor are producing big fish again. Carp to 25lb have been banked with anglers using caster and worm as successful hook baits. Tel: Dave Moody at Reid’s Tackle on 01722 711616.
