Our guide to places to fish in Nottinghamshire including information on venues, and contact details.
Attenborough Gravels, Long Eaton Lack of colour in the water doesn’t help anglers looking for bream on here, but when conditions are good a real bumper day can be expected. There are plenty of roach and skimmers about for the pole anglers on lagoon one. One angler was admitting to have caught six bream at the top end of lagoon two of which were on the feeder.. Info: 01159 199500.
Beeston Canal, Lenton to Beeston This hard flowing canal is absolutely stuffed with fish at the moment. Anglers can sit anywhere and catch 5 to 6lb of bits. 1gram rigs or lollypop floats with caster or maggot about 9m out will sort them out. If you’re after bream head for the bubbler pegs 110-115, or the wides at macro bridge pegs 40-50. Some nice chub in the late 50’s being taken on worm and caster, these go up to around 3lb. Info: 01159 199500 or www.nottinghamanglers.co.uk
Peacock Lake, Gunthorpe The sunken tree on peg 1 has become a magnet for some carp to double figures. Fish are being caught shallow on maggot and caster. Pleasure angling is no longer allowed. To book matches call: 07779 082045.
River Trent, Burton on Trent, Branston Golf Course Situated adjacent to the Burton south exit of the main A38 this section of the river is within the grounds of Branston Golf Club. After a few years in the doldrums this Repton Angling Club controlled section of the river has exploded into life with recent exploratory matches producing superb results. The 50+ peg section of river averages 4ft to 6ft deep and contains chub to 3lb lots of roach to 1lb+ dace, gudgeon perch and a resident shoal of bream in the 4/5lb class (however these do cruise the length and are likely to show up anywhere). Due to the floating and fixed weed at this time of year a float fished in conjunction with rod and line are the order of the day (in fact the week end matches here are float only for this reason). This can be either waggler or stick and visiting anglers are advised to set up both in order to obtain the best results from the river recommended baits are caster or bronze maggot ( with a few reds for a change of hook bait) fished over hempseed. The water is available for club bookings and the Sunday opens are becoming a regular feature. For information on tackle tactics or advice on the matches. River Trent, East Bridgford and Burton Joyce The river is fishing brilliant at the moment with plenty of roach on the wag and maggot in the ferry field, pegs 300’s. Odd bream are showing around the paddock at the bottom of the road stretch, pegs 120-130. Some nice barbel are being taken from Nelson Field, 185-188, on the old halibut tactics, these average 7-9lb and its just a little chuck. Info: 01159 199500.
Trent Dyke, Farndon to Newark The fishing is just like the “curate’s egg” on the Dyke, good in parts but not in others. In the low numbers down the long lane at Farndon, skimmers and roach have been feeding well although the roach do seem to be of a smaller average size than last season. The specimen hunters have been taking a few good barbel and chub opposite the weir and the odd good bream has also shown. In the Hudsons bay area the skimmer weights are just holding sway over the roach catches with a few double figure nets reported. The Devon Mouth area continues to confound, for after anglers reporting a bite every cast from small roac. For further information contact John Garland on 01636 702962.
