Every now and then and a new idea comes into the fishing arena that really help us get the most from our sport. In recent years I can recall hollow elastic, the pull bung, pellet wagglers and the lollypop flat float to name a few, these have now stood the of time and our now permanently in our armoury. Initially anglers took a little time to realise the benefits of these fantastic ideas but now they have well and truly embraced them. Manufacturers have added their own improvements and they are now in mass production and used by thousands of anglers. Other ideas have been classed as gimmicks and have been put back into the cupboard, never to grace the banks again.
Cralusso have been in the float business for a relatively short period of time but in my opinion they have had a tremendous impact on our sport. They have produced some of the best flat floats in the world. They say that the proof of the pudding is in the eating – Just look at the teams in a world championship, when the event is held on flowing water, you will see whose floats they chose to help them try to win the most prestigious trophy in coarse fishing.
To quote Karoly Kralik the leader of Cralusso when launching the company ‘I knew that I had to think and work in different ways to the norm – Thinking outside the box if you like only that would lead to really new designs and true innovation” Well think outside the box he did! Cralusso now produce a superb range of pole floats and wagglers, and it is two of the waggler range that I want to concentrate on, as I
The Rocket
The rocket was developed for long, accurate, straight casting. The float starts at 6 grams and goes up to a whopping 20 grams in 2 gram divisions. Each float can be calibrated by slightly raising the removable stem of the float from the body; this increases the shotting capacity by a further 2 grams for a 6 gram float up to 3.5 gram for the 20 gram version. Weights can be inserted internally into the body to make this a truly self cocking float, if that is what is required. The unique part of Rocket range is the special
The attached photographs show the Rocket and its various antennas. You will notice how the stem is removable from the body and the additional weights that can be added or removed from the float.
The Rocket Light is an un-bodied version of the Rocket. It has an extraordinary flying ability coupled with amazing accuracy. This float is available in the following sizes: 1.5 grs, 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 grs. It benefits from the same special attachment system. Additional weight cannot be added internally. The floats are made out of very good quality materials; they do not warp when used in warm conditions or take in water. The floats are ideal for use in the majority of situations however, they come into their own when distance and accuracy are required. The clear nature of the float also lends itself to shallow or clear water conditions.
When I first saw these floats I was sceptical because they are different to what I believed was right – the more traditional 2AAA type waggler. Now that I am using them they are fast replacing all my other wags. For carp fishing during the winter and spring – when the fish are 3′ deep or more they are brilliant. They cast accurately do not dive and have a thin diameter that offers sensitivity for shy biting fish.
So how do we use them? The principle is the same as the traditional waggler in that the float is locked onto the main line. This achieved in two ways. Firstly a waggler attachment can be used and the link part of the attachment clipped onto the special attachment system so that the attachment is free running within the wire.
I have been experimenting with a snap swivel and two small locking shot and it is this method that I personally prefer, certainly for the light version. Shotting patterns down the main line are then your personal choice. I have been using a small Cralusso ‘gold swivel’ as weight down the line, I attach the hook length to this in an effort to avoid line spin that you can get on the retrieve with some baits.
When you prepare to cast ensure that the float is hanging vertically on the line, occasionally the float can hang horizontally, just swing the float towards you and take hold of the hook length, this is normally enough for the float to reset and hang correctly. Cast the float as you normally would. A word of warning do not try to cast too hard these floats fly like the proverbial rocket! The Rocket Lights are available below at £3.50 per unit, including postage and packaging.
