Must try harder!

Travelling the short distance to Gwinear for the Tuesday open I was not sure what to expect. We had had three frosts in three days it was bound to put the fish off. I drew peg 52 on the banjo and a peg with some great potential. A good pole peg and with a chance to get the waggler out as the point of the island is about 25 meters in front of you. The wind was perfect slightly over the right shoulder which should allow good presentation. I also set up two half gram ‘Capri’ pole rigs to fish at the bottom of the shelf and at 12 meters if required.

Rocket attack!

At the all in I fed the pole line and started on the Rocket Light 4 gram waggler feeding half a dozen 8mm pellets, after about 10 minutes I started to get some indications, a positive bite and I was away with a common about 6lb three more carp followed before a quite spell and then some more carp. On the two hour mark I had 10 in the net for about 40lb I could see Andy Dare on peg 37 getting a few on the pole and word was that Roger Baker on 25 was getting plenty of ‘Newbie’s’ they had seem to have shoaled up in front of him on the shallow bar. I unfortunately got broke by a Harpic – A carp that went ‘Clean around the bend’ I lost the waggler as well; I retackled but could not buy a bite on the waggler.

The rest of the match was completed on the pole and fish came in fits and starts until the whistle went. I had an improvement from last week as I weighed 110lb but was beaten into third place by Mark Lazell who had 115lb and trounced by Andy Dare who had 132lb. He has an uncanny knack of slipping carp into his net without you noticing and all the time telling everybody that he is struggling! There were some great backing weights again with a couple of 90lbs. I cannot believe the fishing at the moment it’s brilliant. Third for the third time in just over a week, never mind must try harder! not that I am complaining as I am really enjoying my fishing at the moment.
