Raker Lakes. (Horseshoe lake.)

Saturday saw myself and 16 other angler tackle the Horseshoe lake at a fishery called Raker lakes nr York. The lake averages around 6ft in the middle and 2ft to the far bank. The lake has a good stock of both carp and silverfish which normally feed rather well at this time of year. My match plan was to fish 13m down the middle with maggot and caster for silverfish and then to fish 17m with corn and caster to target the big chub and carp. This plan ended up being change as the peg I draw was not the best area for carp and chub. I draw peg 19 which was 18m wide and virtually featureless apart from an ariater 13m to my left. For the first two hours I lose fed caster to the far bank and fished over them with a 4×10 KC Carpa Chimp which was on 0.12-0.10 silstar line with a size 20 B911 hook, so nothing complicated. I was also feeding two lines at 13m one up to the ariater and one straight in front of me, up to the aerator I fed a golf ball sized ball of micro pellets with 3 grains of corn, a few caster and a few maggots. The line straight in front of me was my ’silverfish’ line so to speak which was fed very negatively with just a few maggots every 5 minuets fed through a toss pot as the fish were very finicky and shy biters. 2 hours into the match I’d had 5 small roach on caster at 17m and with no signs of any chub around me being caught I decided to rest it and go down the track which was also slow to get started. After 1 hour down the track I’d had a dozen small roach so not much difference in the far bank line, but it didn’t matter as no one around me was catching either. Suddenly as the water warmed up the fish got going and I started to put a few better fish in the net with a 12oz chub and 6 6oz skimmers so I’d trebled my weight. The lad to my left then had good run of fish which all averaged 6oz at the smallest. I plugged away down the middle for the rest of the match and ended up with a good 10lb 4oz which was enough for my section and 3rd in match. The winner came off peg 24 where young Adam Miller had a brilliant 29lb 14oz of small stocky carp and chub.
