Around the first weekend in November a strange phenomenon happens in the Duchy, local match anglers that have seemingly hibernated
Maver Pole Pairs Championships, Larford Lakes 2006
Just Missed Out…….
This was an unlucky event for Myself and my pairs partner Matt Pillay.
Matt was on the match lake (peg 67…middle of the burr bank)…
I was on specimen lake peg 9….we were both reasonably happy with the draw, although I did feel I needed a bit of fortune, as I felt I was competing against better pegs to my right…
The day before on the maver pairs final I had won my section from peg 7 on the specimen lake with the method feeder over my pole line, Phill Ringer was next peg to me and I pipped him by 800grms…..
With this sun final being a pole only match I knew I had to amass a good weight of skimmers to do well as I was convinced more carp would be caught in the better pegs to my right….In order to get the result I needed I sat at my peg for a while thinking about the best way to make an extraction from this peg,It wasn’t long before I realised the only way I could make miracle happen was to feed a bait that nobody was using around me….yes you’ve guessed it THE MEAT….
I had Adam Wakelin to my left and Klaus Fix to my right…..I knew Klaus would heavily ball it on the pole line with the intentions to catch carp over ground bait,Oh and he did exactly that….At the all in Klaus proceeded to put 35 balls out(this was before a ground bait limit was enforced on the complex)…
On the whistle I potted out a 250ml cup of meat then began to aggressively feed with the catapult, with the intentions to pull fish off anglers either side of me…..After a very slow start I gradually began to put a skimmer weight together, whilst anglers in view seemed to be struggling for a bite!!!
I ended up absolutely bagging with skimmers on the drop…..At the final whistle I weighed in 40kilos of bream, which was enough to win the lake….Klaus was last in the section with 7 kilo, and Adam was second in the section with 16 kilo..
Matt was third in his section on the match lake with 37 kilos, Very unlucky as he only needed 39 kilos to win the section….
Overall we finished second with 4pts…..Steve and Geoff Ringer won the title with 3pts…Des Ship and Steve Mayo were third with 4pts..(lesser overall weight)….
