Well it was nearly five weeks since I had managed to get out and do a bit of fishing and have to admit I was reallly chomping at the bit to get out and hopefully catch some fish so I booked myself and my mate into the open at Oakfield Fishery near Bicester.
Saturday arrived and after collecting my mate from Reading we were on our way and arrived at the fishery at about 8.15am. We both had a walk round each lake and discussed where we fancied drawing as we both wanted to avoid the strong wind blowing down each lake. At the draw, I drew Peg 15 on Brook which was a corner peg with the wind blowing right into it, not the draw I wanted but one which I needed to tackle. There is an island which runs right down the middle of Brook and most fish are caught fishing to this island, though my problem here was the island was 17 metres away and coupled with the wind, fishing to the island could prove tricky.
I decided I’d try it but I also would fish 2 lines in my left hand margin, one at 10 metres and one at 16 metres which were both identical depths of about 3 1/2ft. Rig wise for the corn rig, I opted for a Mick Wilkinson tapered diamond to fish corn, and a Mick Haskins(ackoo floats) 0.3 pellet float to fish a 4mm expander or maggot. Hook wise it was a Kamassan B911 size 18 on the corn rig and a size 20 on pellet/maggot rig. For the line at 17 metres I went with a KC Carpa chimp 4 x 16, 0.13 main line, Kamassan B911 size 18 and grey hydro with a Pull Bung. As a precaution I set up the bomb rod just incase the winder got stronger.
On the all in, I kinder potted a pinch of micros, couple of grains of corn and some maggots on each line and started on the 17m line. As predicted this was a struggle trying to keep the pole and rig still, so I added some more line to the rig to increase the length of line with added back shot to try stabilise the rig more. First put in after I adjusted my set up and we were in and away and the first carp was in the net. To cut a long story short despite adusting my rigs and even fishing the bomb during the match, I only managed one more fish during the duration of the match. Still I supppose that’s winter fishing but it won’t stop me trying again next Saturday.
