Well another good weekend for me this week, I decided not to bother going fishing on the Saturday as the lack of decent matches and decent weather didn’t inspire me much so a day off was brilliant! But on Sunday it was business as usual on the final round of the Eastern Winter League, I was picked again and was buzzing after last weeks good result and just hoped I could prove it wasn’t a fluke!!! Anyway at the draw I got handed peg 228 on the scrub field/fence end section. The section fished fairly well the previous week so I was happy as it seemed pretty fair. But with plenty of top anglers in my section including my old hero Tony Bell two pegs away I knew id have my work cut out!
With the draw at 7.45 and the start at 10.30 you get so much time and I hate complicating things so as usual I was set up by 9 o clock!!!!! I decided 2 rigs would be enough this week so set up a 0.6gr senses lomme pencil float and a 0.8gr Jean François for something a bit more positive. Both where on 0.10 mainline with 0.07 hook lengths and the lighter rig had a 20 mustad roundbend match and the heavier one a size 18 of the same pattern with number 3 elastic. With the wind being awful I really wanted to make the 7m line work as holding 13m wasn’t going to be easy. At the all in I fed similar to last week and put 6 balls at 7m with 200ml of joker in, and 10 balls long with 300ml in as I felt id need to leave it longer.
I started on the 7m line and it was very slow!!!! And I couldn’t really catch anything. And with 30 minutes gone and only 6-7 fish while everyone else was bagging was leaving me a bit frustrated to say the least! Anyway I decided to sort myself out and concentrate! I was soon catching a fish every cast and they where a better stamp than the previous week and I was happy now with the way things were going, I topped up very regularly with golf ball sized balls of joker mud which keeps the fish happy without spooking them and it tends to just get stronger and stronger! I also managed to catch some net fish and snuck 2 8oz skimmers, an 8oz roach and about ten about 6-8oz so thing were going well!!!!
After 3 hours I knew id be well up there in the section, everyone was catching fish but all seemed to be trying to fish further out than me and were all having problems with the wind. But I noticed Belly pulling a typical belly trick and was starting to empty it on caster at 4-5m!!!! Now I reckon if everyone had of tried this no one would have caught but Belly seems to have the nack of doing things like that and they always pay off. Going into the last hour and I was sure he was catching me up with a string of quality roach. I was still catching a fish every cast on single bloodworm 2 inches off bottom and was happy doing this all the time praying tony wouldn’t keep bagging. Anyway at the all out Tony had a stupid grin on his face so I knew it would be close but he assured me he only had 8-9lb and I knew I had 10lb plus, everyone seemed to be weighing 8-9lb in so I was getting a little worried but I was well pleased with my 15lb 5oz which was leading the section until tony pulled his net out and I knew it would be close and he weighed 15lb 4oz!!!!! I had a 2oz roach right on time too. So another section win for me and I was chuffed to bits.
The team did the damage again and won the league by quite a margin. I ended up 6th in the match and picked up a nice 80 quid for that and also won the team pool for another 50 quid so all in all a brilliant day for me!
