Apologies for the delay in delivering last weeks blog, but with me not fishing this weekend I decided to join them both together and offer a sort of hybrid of last weeks matches, and this weeks sole evening match, as I didn’t think that that warranted a piece of its own!
So, starting at the beginning, last Thursday I fished the evening match at Charnock;s Carterhall Fishery, it was absolutely tipping it down and blowing a hooley, and a grand total of three people tipped up!
I caught well for the first hour, and then my peg seemed to dry up, and I could see my mate Jack Rothwell catching well on the other bank, and with me not going anywhere, I packed up and went and watched him. To be honest, my heart just wasn’t in it, so the least said the better really.
A slap around the chops and I was well up for the sixth round of the Ranskill Summer League on the Saturday however, I am sitting second in this at the minute and having won the previous round, I was well up for it. In went the drawing arm and out came peg 31, which I was happy with, I had drawn the peg next to it (32) a few weeks previous and come second with 72lb of skimmers, so I thought a similar short worm and caster attack may work well.
Then came the first disaster of the day, the organisers realised there weren’t enough pegs in to accommodate the 38 anglers fishing, so a redraw was called! On the second dip I pulled out peg 18, which is a peg I have a love hate relationship with it. I have drawn the peg four times in the past, and blanked off it twice and won the match off it twice, hardly an area you want to be in when a steady league result is what you are after!
The peg is fantastic when the carp feed, but when they don’t it is among the worst silver fish pegs on the lake. Still, I decided to put a line in for them, and was glad I did as for the first five hours out of the six hour match the carp just didn’t want to play ball!
I kept having a look for one but I never had so much of a sniff, and going into the last hour I was in serious trouble, probably last in the section with around 15lb of silvers. Luckily, a few carp showed up in the last hour, and I took six carp averaging around 4lb a piece on big pellet to finish with just short of 39lb.
This was good enough only for second in section, with league leader Nigel Wheatcroft winning my section with 53lb of big skimmers and carp taken on meat. So, I dropped a point in the league and didn’t pick up any brass- gutted!
It wasn’t all bad that day however, as I had a tenner on Mick Bull to win the Fishomania, which he did, and at 8:1 it was worth the same as winning the match I suppose! Its like my mate Wraggy says, its better to be lucky than good!
On the Sunday I was due to fish the practise match for the Super League Round on the Horbury Canal near Wakefield, I was quite looking forward to it, until I asked Matt Godfrey (or ‘three times’ as he shall now be known in these parts) for his opinion on what I should do at the venue, and he replied “Its crap, don’t go, get yourself to Lindholme and catch some fish!” If he can’t catch em there what chance have I got!
Still, I was committed, and after a drive round half of West Yorkshire trying to find the pub where the draw was to be held, I got there just in time for a greasy breakfast. When I pulled my peg out, it was met with a series of indifferent groans, not the best area I was told.
I had Ossett’s Mark Wainwright to my right, and he had a bridge to his right and a bit of room, so I expected a bit of a battering, and I got one! No excuses, I fished the peg totally wrong, sitting long for a big fish when there simply weren’t any there, and a tidy small fish approach would have faired a lot better.
At the weigh in, everyone in my section except for me and another lad who had fished for big fish had between 1 and two kilos, our section of canal proved really fair on the day. I weighed a measley 350 grams- nightmare!
The match was won by team mate Phil Morgan, with a cracking five kilos made up of three bream and a load of squatt fish, with Brian Hawkes and Andy Shaw also picking up money, so it wasn’t a bad day for the team as a whole! What difference a week makes!
Come this Thursday night and the sun was shining, and what a difference it made to the turnouts at the Charnock open! It went from three to ten, and one of the lads decided to run a big fish prize alongside the main pool, to add a bit more fun to the proceedings!
I was last to draw, and ended up on peg 14, the peg that Wraggy broke the five hour match record off a couple of weeks ago. I couldn’t have been happier! I decided to fish my trusty maggot approach, and it worked a treat, I caught ide steadily all night, and then on the very last drop landed a 6lb carp which took my weight to 35lb, and helped me scoop the biggest fish prize as well! I picked up £75- not bad for a 10 pegger!
So at least I ended my week on a high, and with this weekend being taken up with work and bank running, I am itching to get fishing again next week!
I had a nice day bank running on the Horbury, and enjoyed watching some very good anglers, which made me realise where I went wrong the previous week, and also helped me pick up some tips on squatt and hemp fishing which I look forward to putting into practise. The team won the round as well, and with Matt winning the world champs, all in all it wasn’t such a bad day for Triana!
Tight Lines For Now
