A good ide-a!

Well after the serious weeks fishing in France last week, it was nice to get back to normal this week and a double header at sessay was just what the doctor ordered! I decided on my usual maggot approach and arrived at the fishery expecting 30-40 anglers and was a bit shocked to find only 20 names down, oh well least we would all get a proper days fishing which was just what I needed to get my confidence back.

I drew next to Ian Bowman again on saturday but we had lots of room, he was on peg 28 I was on 32 with Tommy Pickering to my right on 36. Now I was just in one of them moods to dish a proper battering out so I felt sorry for these two!! I expected sport to be much better than the last time id been, so thought the mud line would be the one, I set up a 4×12 doctored chianti for in front of the sedges a 4×10 carpa bully for the mud line and a 4×12 carpa bully for the egde, all shotted with a simple bulk. Line was 0.10 with a 16 801 and white hydro.

I kicked off with a big pot of maggots tight to the mud and a good handfull on the sedge swim and down the edge. I had 4 ide in 4 casts in 2 foot and an odd f1, but I could already see the ide crawling up the rat holes so went straight on it, it was solid and I was getting one a chuck for a good 3 hours while Tommy and Ian seemed to be catching very little. My only concern was my lack of carp and f1s. It never really died on the mud line and I caught steadily all match, id got thru about 6-7 pints of maggots flavoured with the Dynamite’s scopex.

I’d had a lot of fish but 80 percent were ide, Ian was first to weigh and had 38lb I put 73lb on the scales with Tommy not even bothering, id dished a proper battering out!!!! It was good enough for 4th on the day with Ghandi winning it with 95lb on the pellet.

On the Sunday it was a much better turn out with 40 odd people on, I drew peg 40 which is an area ive never been on before, never the less im so confident with the maggots at the moment I felt id catch a few. Everything was the same as the day before, and after 2 hours I was sacking with ide again but a few more F1’s than the Saturday. But all of a sudden the mud line completely died!!!! No matter what I did the odd small ide was all that came of it, I felt I would catch a few down the edge and you can catch 25-30lb in the last hour down there so I kept that well primed. I decided to start a new 2ft swim to get me through the difficult mid match spell where everyone was struggling. And it worked a treat with a steady run of small f1’s and ide coming to the net.

With an hour to go I was beating those around me but felt I needed a big push in the last hour. I went down the edge and caught 3 F1’s straight away followed by a 3lb barbel, I had 6 barbel up to 3lb in as many casts followed by a couple more f1s, the barbel are a treat to catch and pull like mad! Up to me weighing in 83lb was winning I didn’t think I had that and put 74lb on the scales for 4th again! Oh well if anything im consistent!

Anyway im off to Ireland next week for a bit of a relax and also to catch a few fish and drink a few pints of guiness while im there.
