With his mum and dad owning Kiveton Waters, one of the most popular venues in the south east of Sheffield, it is no surprise that young Jake Dye knows a thing or two about commercial carp fishing. This is not the only string to the Creswell youngsters bow however, he is equally at home catching silver fish, forming an integral part of the Tricast Calder squad. We took Jake off his home turf to Carterhall Fisheries at Charnock, and asked him to knock us a net of silver fish together.

“

Jake Dye
I fished a couple of the evening opens on here last year, and caught plenty of fish with a simple maggot approach, so this is all I have bought with me tonight” said Jake as he took the lid of his bucket to reveal two pints of wrigglers.

“With a large stock of ide to 2lb, alongside plenty of carp, tench ,skimmers, barbel and roach., it’s the kind of venue where you are as well fishing a bait that targets everything that swims, and maggots are one of the best and cheapest ways to do this.”

Jake had sat himself on peg 9 of the 20 peg lake, with a large reed fringed island to his left hand side, and some open water to his right. “I am going to fish a line as close to the island as I can in as shallow a water as I can get away with. This should help prevent line bites, as the fish will be feeding off the slope rather than down it, with there tails brushing into the line. I will also feed a line down the track, where I will start the match, and this will also give me somewhere to go should I think my track line needs a rest”.

In terms of rigs, Jake opted for a 4X12s Chianti to 0.12 Mosella Xedion and an 0.10 hook length for his down the track rig. A size 18 Kamasan B911 was his choice of hook, and he matched this rig to 9 hollo elastic.

Regular loosefeeding is key
“I like to spread my shot out at the start of the session and lay my rig in from side to side, or even lower it directly over the bait. At the start of a session, you tend to find that the fish are at lots of different levels in the water, and presenting a slowly falling bait can be a good way of catching a few better fish early, before the fish really get there heads down on the bottom”

As if to prove his point, Jake fed a large kinder pot of maggots to start with and took two big ide on the drop in his first two puts in! After these initial two better fish, Jake started catching a steady stream of smaller roach and ide, topping up with the kinder pot to keep fish coming.

“I am going to concentrate on catching as many fish as I can from down the middle in the early part of the session. I expect at some stage, this line will go quiet and when it does I will go on my island line. Had the weather been warmer, I may have been tempted to just fish up to the island on two lines, but the water is still fairly cold, so I reckon a combination of deep and shallow water tactics will be the best way to catch today”

Considering the fact he was leaving his Island line to later on in the session, I was surprised he wasn’t feeding it, choosing instead to just pot in on the line he was fishing. “Ide are a very aggressive species, similar to chub, and home in on food as soon it hit’s the water, that is why they are often caught shallow. I think you are better off targeting an area of your peg for them, leaving some water for them to back off to, and then fishing there when your line dies. If an ide wants to feed it will come and find feed actively, so feeding two lines can actually be counterproductive, as it can distract them away from where you actually want them to be- where your hookbait is!”

Matt Oldfield displays his beast for the camera
Jake was catching really steadily on the deck, and with no ide competing up in the water he changed his feeding tactic to suit, big potting after every four or five fish instead of feeding with the kinder . “Taking the kinder pot off can save you loads of time if the fish really have their heads down on the deck, as it means you can ship in and out far quicker, without having to worry about bouncing bait out of your pot.”

As predicted, after catching on this line for about an hour, things started to quieten off, and Jake decided it was time to try his island line. He kinder potted in a couple of dozen maggots, and lowered a lighter rig, comprising a 4×10 Carpa Chimp with the stem trimmed down, with the same line hook, and shotting pattern as the deck rig into the swim.

Seconds later, the float was under and the laccy was out, but this time it was a crucian and not an ide that was the culprit. A couple of better roach followed, and then it was back to the ide, as they homed in on their new source of food.

Whats really noticeable about the way Jake fishes is how considered he is, thinking about everything he does and every decision he makes rather than rushing in hap hazard. He is smooth with his tackle, but doesn’t rush or bully fish, taking his time and making sure they end up in the net.

With Jake catching well on his pole line, I decided to have a wander around the lake to see what else was being caught, stopping behind Woodseats angler Matt Oldfield who had hooked into one of the lakes bigger resident carp. After a lengthy battle, it ended up in the onion sack and at 19lb 14oz it shows that its not just silver fish that Charnock has to offer. Matt kindly agreed to let us photograph the fish, and it is displayed next to Jakes catch in the picture.

When I got back to Jake he was still catching as quickly as he had been when we had started 3 hours earlier, but with the light dropping we thought it best to bring the session to a close and get some pictures. With a net of silvers well over 20lb to show for his efforts, Jake had done himself proud and proved that he can hammer them out of any venue, not just Kiveton Waters!

Jake proudly displays his net for the camera

Caistor Fisheries are situated on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds, just two minutes drive from the roman town of Caistor. There are four ponds to choose from, which are all fed naturally with spring water that comes off the Lincolnshire Wolds. There is ample parking and easy access to most pegs. Caistor Fisheries is also a caravan and camping site (for more details please visit the website).

There are Mens/Womens toilets onsite as well as a small tackle shop which can cater for most needs and fresh bait is always available. The cafe offers freshly cooked meals, hot and cold drinks and a selection of sandwiches. The cafe is also where you will pay for your day tickets.

Fishing is from dawn until dusk. No children under 14 years old allowed on pond c and night fishing is by prior arrangement only (£10.00 for 24 hours).

Please be aware that The Environment Agency helps with the management of the fishery and pay regular visits to the site, so please make sure you have your valid fishing licence with you.

Pond A (10 pegs) is a small pond which has been established for seven years. This pond is stocked with Carp to 10lb, Tench to 5lb, Perch to 2lb, Rudd and Roach to 1lb+ and Crucians.

Pond B (20 pegs) is well stocked with plenty of Carp to double figures, it has been open for four years and has produced several 100lb bags.

2006 Top Weights

Mirror Carp 17lb 11oz, Common Carp 13lb 12oz, Crucian Carp 2lb 8oz, Tench 5lb 4oz, Rudd 15oz, Roach 1lb 3oz, Perch 3lb, Fantail Carp 2lb 7oz, Bream 2lb+, Chub 1lb 8oz, Barbel 2lb.

Pond C has been open since May 2004 and is well stocked with Bream, Barbel, Chub and Ide. Whilst there are no huge fish in here, they are growing well and 40-60lb mixed bags are common. In late Summer 2007 100 Brown Trout were introduced to help keep down the Bream fry that were tending to be such a problem.

Pond D is the new match pond with depths from 1m to 3m all over. Three sides are fished with ease from box or basket but the remaining side has pontoons to offer comfortable positions. This pond is stocked with all the species found in the other ponds with the exception of Trout and Perch. This pond is currently only open to campers and matches.

KSDAA control some nine miles of fishing on the river Eden and a further four miles on the river Belah and Scandal Beck, all of these fisheries offer wild brown trout fly fishing. KSDAA members may also fish waters belonging to several other angling associations (please visit website for more details). KSDAA are primarily wild brown trout fisheries where no stocking is carried out, this absence of a put and take policy means that the waters are not always the easiest to fish. Members are encouraged to return fish to help preserve stocks.

River Eden – Pendragon

The Pendragon stretch of water lies from Pendragon castle down to below Dalefoot and offers fly fishing for wild brown trout. The upper section has lots of deep pools and small waterfalls and the middle section is the best but can be difficult to fish. This part of the river is rarely fished.

River Eden – Wharton Hall

The Wharton Hall stretch is immediately below the Pendragon and extends from Stenkrith upstream to white bracken. This part of the river has a no weekend fishing rule and is fly only. This stretch is not over fished.

River Eden – Stenkrith

This stretch is very interesting and accessible. The deep pool under the bridge can contain large amounts of salmon during late october. Below Stenkrith park there is a variety of good water that is rarely fished.

River Eden – Frank`s Bridge

This is a short stretch of the Eden which stretches from a field above frank`s bridge in Kirkby Stephen and ends approx 0.5km upstream. Some large trout may be found here.

River Eden – Eastfield Bridge

This stretch of water is from Eastfield bridge upstream to the flow station which is adjacent to the Kirkby Stephen Warcop road. This stretch can be difficult to fish in areas of dense vegetation, however there are some large wild brown trout residing here.

River Eden – Beckfoot

This stretch of Eden is from Eastfield bridge downstream to Beckfoot where scandal beck enters the Eden. This fishery has mainly shallow sheltered runs.

River Eden – Musgrove

This stretch lies from Blandsworth bridge (upper limit) to great musgrove bridge (lower limit) and can be accessed easily by either bridge. This stretch holds wild brown trout and grayling are also present. This is the most popular stretch of Eden owned by KSDAA. There are large and small pools with runs both fast and small. An excellent stretch for fly fishing.

River Eden – Ploughlands

This stretch is approx 2 miles long and lies from Musgrove bridge (upper limit) to Warcop old bridge (lower limit). This stretch is an easily fished fly water and has had reports of really large fish in recent years.

River Eden – Warcop

This stretch is downstream of Warcop old bridge and is a joint fishery shared with Appelby Angling Association. Below the first field it can be difficult to fish due to the steep banks, continuous trees and barbed wire that restricts access (fly fishing is virtually impossible). This water often contains large numbers of stock fish introduced early in the season by Appelby angling association.

River Belah – Above Belah Bridge

This fishery is upstream from Belah bridge on the Kirkby Stephen – Brough Road, starting 1 field above the bridge. This is a small but attractive trout stream.

River Belah – Below Belah Bridge

This fishery starts 1 field downstream from Belah bridge on the Kirkby Stephen – Brough Road. Overall there is a huge variety of water along the Beck but not all of it is easy to fish with fly. Avoid the river in spate conditions.

There are nine waters available to fish at Borwick Fishing. Eight of the waters are available for day ticket fishing from 7am until dusk and the large jimmy`s lake can only be fished using a 24hr permit or via a membership syndicate permit (£350.00 for 12 months, up to 4 rods).

For beginners free tackle loan is available, which is the loan of a four metre pole free of charge, however a £5.00 deposit is required which is returned when the pole is returned in good condition. Ready made up rigs which include line, float, weights and hook plus a small amount of bait are available for £1.00.

Fingal Fishpond is a 40 peg lake with a two acre area. In march 2004 this lake was stocked with 100 Carp from 5 to 14lb and in april 2004 more than 4000 Carp were introduced which have now reached the 3 to 4lb mark, with a few nearing 6lb.

Little Brooker has 15 pegs and is 1/2 acre in size, stock includes Ghost Carp, Koi, Golden Tench, Golden Orfe and Goldfish.

Harryss Hole ia under an acre in size and has twenty pegs. This lake holds Carp to 8lb+, Crucians to 2lb+ and F1 Hybrid Carp to 2lb+.

Griffish has a four acre area and sixty pegs. This is the deepest pool at over 20ft in depth and is stocked with Carp to 2lb+, however Pike and Carp to 25lb+ have also been caught here.

Gatenby is the smallest water at borwick fishing with room for up to six anglers this is ideal for juniors or beginners. This water holds Golden Rudd, Gold Tench and Crucians.

Dewhurst Deeps has 37 pegs and is 2 acres in size. This lake has stocks of Carp to 3lb+, Ide and Rudd.

Burn is 1/2 acre in area and has 15 pegs. Stocks include Barbel, Chub, Ghost Carp, Ide, Golden Tench and a few other species.

The Last Blast has 17 pegs and is 1/2 acre in size. Stocks include Wels Catfish to double figures, Grass Carp, Ghost Carp, Ide and a few other species.

Jimmy`s Lake is the largest lake and natural stocks include Carp to 30lb+, Pike to 30lb, Tench to 10lb, Eels to 6lb+ and probably holds Bream, Roach and Perch as well. This lake can only be fished by syndicate membership permit or 24hr permit. Day tickets are not valid on this lake.
